Miss London 2019

24-year-old, Zimbawean girl Vimbai Chapungu, has been crowned Miss London 2019, making her the first black person to hold the title and also a finalist for this year’s Miss England beauty pageant.

Vimbai is a Masters’ degree student at a London University. Her Master’s thesis is on the Natural Hair Movement, which is a social phenomenon that seeks to empower Black women to wear their hair in its natural state, as opposed to chemically processing their hair which has adverse health issues.

She is an advocate of natural African hair. According to her, "Black is still being policed in today’s society, and it is only now that people are talking about it, thanks to the few women who have fought for the normalization of natural hair.”

According to reports, Chapungu wore her natural hair during the pageant and she emerged in the top three of the 55 contestants for the bare-faced model title. Talented newly crowned queen is also a trained singer and part-time model.

Chapungu participated in the Miss England Final which was held in Newcastle. She qualified as one of the 50 finalists out of other 20,000 women that entered this year’s competition.
